Get Your Stitch Fix On

When it comes to shopping for clothes I think most of us can agree; It’s frustrating.  Our bodies just don’t conform with the fashion industry sizing charts.  My measurements can easily put me in a range of sizes, and sometimes I just have to face the fact that the last top in the store that should fit, just doesn’t.

So what would make us willingly pay another person (who has neither seen nor met us in person) shop for us?  Curiosity is what got the best of me; That and the rather cheap price tag.  Celebrities have Stylists come to their house all the time with a rack of clothes for them to try on, so why not have the general population be able to do the same?  (Without the Stylist actually coming to your house.)

I was drawn to StitchFix simply because it was the first I had ever heard of for styling services.  You can create an account online and answer a simple survey about your fashion likes and dislikes.  You can tell your personal Stylist a little about yourself, what you are looking for in clothes, and what you are hoping to get out of the experience.  For only $20 the Stylist will take all the information you provided and put together a box of 5 items to send to you.  Bonus:  That $20 you paid will go towards any items you decide to keep.  If you decide you don’t like any of the pieces, you don’t get the $20 back.  When you think about it, paying $20 for a personal Stylist really isn’t so bad.

If you think you are interested in trying Stitch Fix, you can Click Here.  That is my personal referral link that allows you to try Stitch Fix RISK FREE.  That means you don’t have to pay the $20 the first time around!  If you still aren’t sure about signing up, keep reading to check out what I received in my first Stitch Fix Box!

The Pants

Eunina – Madrid Distressed Skinny Jeans $58

When I first pulled the pants out of my box, I wrote them off.  The tag said “low rise” and after having 3 kids, low rise isn’t the most flattering cut on me.  I may be thin, but I still have the soft ‘mom’ tummy, and I try not to wear things that draw attention to that area.  I was also a bit wary on how the jeans would fit me regardless.  Having a stranger who has never seen nor met me before pick out my pants seemed a bit precarious.

I love them!  The denim stretches and hugs my body correctly; The waist is more of a mid-rise than a low rise, making my earlier fears invalid.  The length of the pants were another main concern of mine, and they turned out to be perfect!  My legs are long, and generally regular pants run short on me; These jeans fall just to the ankle.  I can wear them easily with flats or cute heels; and because the denim is soft and stretchy, they easily roll up for the more casual look.

The Top

Truly Poppy – Arachna Lace Detail Blouse $58

This shirt is my “safe shirt.”  I liked it immediately for its lace detail, loose fit, and dark coloring.  I’ll be the first to admit that I have far too many black shirts in my wardrobe, but I think I would have loved this shirt no matter the color.

This top fit like a glove!  The design is simple and can easily be worn dressed up or down.  Paired with the jeans and heels, it would make a great date night outfit!  For the days when I am chasing my girls around, I can just switch out the shoes for a more casual look.  I don’t feel constricted in the outfit and can easily move and bend down.  I tried the top with the necklace my Stylist selected, and while I liked the look, I think statement earrings would be a better choice for this top.  The lace detail of the top plus a necklace just seemed too busy.

The Plaid Top

Skies Are Blue – Maguire Elbow Patch Top $58

The fabric on this top is incredibly soft.  I was a little disappointed when I pulled this top out because I wasn’t looking to add a ‘winter’ top to my wardrobe.  (I already have a red and black plaid shirt.)

The fit was nice, and I was able to move easily.  I saw no point in changing out of the skinny jeans, and instead just added a pair of boots to the look.  Normally I like to roll my sleeves up with shirts like this, but I left them long to show the elbow-patch detail.  The elbow, and the neckline add a little something extra to otherwise simple shirt.  I probably would have kept my entire StitchFix box if it wasn’t for this one shirt.  Not to say I didn’t like it, I just didn’t like it enough, and I won’t wear it much in the coming months.

The Necklace

Bancroft- Aliza Filigree Teardrop Necklace $34

I wasn’t overly impressed with the necklace.  I liked it well enough, and I thought the detail of it was gorgeous, but it fell a bit flat for this review.  I am a bit biased and spoiled in jewelry, as I work as a Brand Ambassador for Chloe + Isabel.  I usually invest in pieces that have a lifetime guarantee, because let’s be honest; Jewelry tarnishes over time.

The price point wasn’t bad for the necklace itself, and I would have kept it if I had loved everything else in my box; but it just didn’t make the cut.  I saw myself putting it away for the occasional date night, and that would be about it.  For the women who aren’t too adventurous in the jewelry they buy for themselves, this would be a great option.  It’s a statement piece, but not the kind to quickly go out of style or seem ‘gaudy.’

The Kimono

Kaileigh – Tinkham Kimono $38

First and foremost; this was the first piece I initially loved when pulling out of the box.  I saw so much potential in it, and it was something that I would never have picked out for myself.  The pattern is gorgeous, and even though the Kimono itself is black, the print made me think of Spring.

I had some trouble at first trying to find a look that worked well with a Kimono.  The fabric is sheer and light-weight, but long.  I tried the stylist suggestions first; trying on a dress and heels with the Kimono over it.  It was no use, I just didn’t have the type of slip dress needed to work with the Kimono.  Next, I tried the jeans with just a regular tank top.  This look worked better, but I still felt something was missing.  I added a long sleeve shirt and a belt to complete the look.  For spring, a tank top will work best, but for winter I really liked the look of the long sleeve shirt.  The belt just added a nice definition to my waist.

In the end I kept the jeans, lace top, and kimono.  Good jeans are so hard to come by, and I was so surprised that these fit me so well.  For a Stylist who has never seen nor met me in person, she knocked my box out of the park!  I may not have loved everything in the box, but everything fit me perfectly and I feel like she really listened to my notes.  I mentioned that I was a mother chasing young children and I needed clothes that could bend and move with me.  All of these pieces did exactly that!

If I had decided to keep the entire box I would have received a 25% discount.  I would have loved to keep everything, but I knew realistically I wasn’t going to wear 2 of the items very often.  In the end I am so happy I took a risk and let someone else pick out clothes for me.  I was able to have the box shipped to me (free shipping), try everything on at home, and ship the pieces I didn’t want back.  Stitch Fix supplies the bag and shipping label to ship everything back, so there’s no added cost to you.

As an added bonus you will find a style suggestion sheet in your box (along with a breakdown of prices of your items).  This sheet is a great tool to use for pieces you aren’t sure how to style.  I used it to style the Kimono, and in the end I liked what I did with it.  You can also select your price points for each item before you have your clothes sent to you!  That way you know you won’t be falling in love with a top that costs $150.

    1. You should! Good jeans are so hard to find so I am so happy with these

  2. I think this is a great idea. It’s interesting to get someone else’s opinion and see what they would choose. It also stops you from being stuck in a rut. I really like the jeans and the black top. x

  3. I am quite intrigued by services like Stitch Fix! I would be interested to see what someone else would pick out for me, but I am also incredibly particular when it comes to shopping for clothing, including brand, fabric, and care research. Are you able to put parametres on what they send you, such as ethical companies, natural fibres, etc?

    1. They have a pretty extensive survey to find out what your likes and dislikes are, but I’m not so sure about the ethical companies. Certainly a question to ask them! They do however offer a notes section for your stylist that you can mention whatever you need too. That is where I mentioned about chasing around kids all day and not liking anything too form fitting around the stomach.

  4. My experience with Stitch Fix was similar. The stylist was really good at picking out pieces for me that I didn’t even know I liked! Everything I got fit perfectly, and I did end up keeping my whole box. I like your kimono; it’s one of the fashion statements I’m adoring these days. I pair mine with a white tee and some converse shoes for an easy breeze look that is effortless for a mom on the go. Your tank would look cute under a bright cardigan too. Thanks for sharing your looks. I’m always looking for fun new inspirations!

    1. I love converse shoes, so I will have to try that look with the kimono! I was surprised how much I enjoyed the items I received, and I am looking forwards to trying another box. Thanks for reading!
